53% can't tell their content apart from the competition's

No wonder, 40% never wrote down what makes them different

HubSpot just surveyed 1,505 marketers for its State of Marketing 2026 report. 53% say they can't differentiate their content in an AI-saturated market.

Most will tell you they have a POV. Almost none of them can say it in one sentence.

→ AI didn't cause the sameness. It just exposed it.

When everyone has the same tools, the only edge left is the one thing AI can't generate: a point of view (POV). If you haven’t written that down, that’s a leadership problem, dressed up as a marketing issue.

Here’s where it went wrong:

1. When you use AI, you sound like your competitor.

86% of marketers now use AI. Using the same models, running on the same training data, and defaulting to the same "safe" tone. No wonder every brand starts sounding like every other brand.

Unless someone actively fights to build and guard your brand's POV.

2. Volume pressure, without a quality gate

83% of marketers say they're expected to produce more content than ever. AI scaled the volume. Human oversight didn't scale with it.

AI didn’t make your content bland. Nobody stopping it did.

If your team is hitting the highest quota, that's not an accomplishment. That’s a sign you have no POV and an identity crisis.

3. No POV in equals generic content out

AI amplifies whatever you hand it. Give it nothing distinctive, and you get the same generic content back. Just faster and louder.

→ 40% of companies still haven't written down what makes them different.

And chances are, they’re heavily represented in the 53% who can’t tell their content apart from the competition’s.

The good news: this is fixable:

1. Put your POV in writing

This is the root fix, the other two depend on it. It's your starting point before you touch the tools.

One sentence: what does your company believe that your competitors don't or won't.

2. Make your POV a constraint, not a suggestion

If you want to break the default, make AI answer to your POV. Make it part of the instructions it gets every time. It’s a gate, not another guideline nobody reads.

→ Build your POV into the system.

3. Make one human responsible for what goes out

Volume went up. Review didn’t scale with it. The fix isn’t slowing down production. It’s making one person accountable for what goes out.

→ One person with the authority to say no.

Closing thought

Everyone has access to the same tools. Not everyone has the nerve to take a position.

That part still requires a human.

Over to you.
